Titan: Saturn’s Moon with Atmosphere, Lakes, and Organic Haze

Titan, Saturn’s largest moon, has a dense, planet-like atmosphere composed mainly of nitrogen (95%) and methane (5%), with a surface pressure slightly higher than Earth’s. Unique among moons, Titan hosts stable bodies of liquid methane and ethane, including lakes, rivers, and seas. The surface temperature is extremely cold, around -179°C (-290°F), and beneath the icy crust lies a subsurface ocean of liquid water. Titan is enveloped in a thick, permanent orange haze made of complex organic molecules called tholins. This haze gives Titan its distinctive color and obscures much of its surface from view. Due to its rich organic chemistry and presence of both liquid hydrocarbons and water, Titan is considered a key target for studying prebiotic conditions similar to early Earth, offering valuable insights into the possible origins of life.
